Meridian Background and Description
Location
Meridian is located on Elbow Cay (pronounced key), a small, charming, tranquil island in the Abacos. Part of the Bahamas, the Abacos are also known as the "Family Islands" and are approximately 175 miles east of West Palm Beach. Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island is the connecting airport to this island of long sandy beaches. Historic Hope Town is truly one of the unspoiled spots on earth. The harbour is filled with sailboats from near and far, and the narrow streets lead to views of gardens, pastel colored historic houses, and vistas of the ocean.
Why We Started Visiting Hope Town
About 12 years ago, my architect husband Peter started designing a house for a couple, who "wintered" at Man-o-War Cay. He flew down regularly from Charlottesville, Virginia to meet with them and discuss their house plans. Of course, every time Peter returned, he raved about this beautiful place he visited. Eventually, our whole family visited Hope Town and everyone fell in love with it. One visit led to another, and SOON we visited the island two to three times a year. A few years ago we bought property and built Meridian. We wanted a permanent place for our children to visit. We all love different things about the island: the serenity, casualness, privacy, boating, walking, warmth of the people, deserted beaches, and great fishing. Daniel (our son) recently caught a 150 pound blue marlin!
Description Of Meridian
Meridian is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Sea of Abaco and the Atlantic Ocean. The house has 270 degree views, including the Atlantic Ocean. We have been told by many "islanders" that we have one of the most beautiful views on the island. We think we do! Hours can be spent on the expansive decks watching powerboats dart back and forth and sailboats floating languidly along. The mahogany decks are designed so that visitors can always sit somewhere in the sun, or for many, out of the sun. Immediately after coming out of the house, there is a short walk down the hill to a dock we share with other homeowners. This dock provides a great fishing place for the kids, a relaxing swimming location, or a place to keep your boat.
The interior of the house is beautifully designed to give full vistas with French doors opening on three sides. The master bedroom has a breathtaking view of Tahiti Beach, which is to the south of the island. The living area is one large open space combining the kitchen, dining, and living areas There is stereo and a television with satellite and DVD player.
The bedrooms are beautifully furnished, and the Master Bedroom has a queen bed. It has its own Master Bathroom and walk-in closet. The second bedroom has two single beds, and the third bedroom has a queen bed. The second and third bedrooms share a bathroom with a shower. Abundant bedding and linen are supplied.
The kitchen is "state of the art" and equipped with everything needed. Please let us know, though, if something is missing, so that we can add it.
